__The New Mt. Calvary Christian Center was established in 1943 as the Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder E.W. Wells in Greenhill Subdivision on Mary Edith Street. The membership was small in number but big in heart. Over the next 46 years, we experienced leadership changes several times.
In April 1989, the Lord answered the cries of His children and sent a TRUE shepherd to the flock. The Holy Spirit moved and Apostle John E. Williams, Sr. became pastor. Under the teaching brought forth from God's vessel concerning the Holy Spriit and Sacrificial living, the church body began to grow and the power of the Holy Spirit increased in the body. Apostle Williams and our wonderful First Lady, Joyce Williams served as more than just a preacher who delivered a sermon on Sunday morning. Pastor Williams has shown the true meaning of the title "shepherd". He was also a man with a great vision.
The New Mt. Calvary Christian Center has moved from 1600 Yarbrough Street to 6300 Yarbrough Street. The sanctuary has quadrupled in size from comfortably seating 100 to 600, from 2 classrooms to 6 classrooms, a nursery, a larger pastor's study, a conference room, secretary's office, 4 restrooms with several stalls, beautiful foyer, and two 22 passenger buses were purchased to provide transportation for those who needed a ride to church and for traveling.
A Television Ministry was also formed to take the Word of God into homes of those who were unable to attend services. We have a strong teaching ministry which consist of Bible Class, Ministers Class, Deacon and Deaconess Seminar, Marriage & Single's Classes; Demonology Class, Deity of Christ and Holy Spirit, Healing, Armor Bears, Effective Prayer, Teen Awareness, Stewardship, and Discipleship just to name a few.
The vision is further becoming a reality with the new Family Life Center. The purpose of this center is to reach those in the community by offering GED and other classes to those who need training to get better jobs. It also includes a gymnasium for the neighborhood children to have a safe place to play games, after-school programs, and other programs that assist in the betterment of their future as well as teaching them the Word of God. The Family Life Center is now in operation and the Youth Smmer Program will be open this summer. But it doesn't stop there.
We now have locations in Brooksville and Yazoo City and more are being planted as the Holy Spirit leads.
As the ministry continues to grow, so does the church history. We praise God for where we've come from, where we are now, and where He's leading us. | |
